Boys & Girls Clubs of Chattanooga and Judge Bob Moon host Male Mentoring Event

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Chattanooga (BGCC) along with Judge Bob Moon will host Tie Day, Thursday, July 29, 2010 at the Highland Park Boys & Girls Club. Tie Day was created a few years ago with the inspiration of Judge Bob Moon. He had witnessed young men in his courtroom that were void of appropriate attire. This brought forth the idea to make sure all young men knew how to tie a necktie.

Local judges, attorneys and businessmen will mentor to a group of young men by teaching them how to tie a necktie. This will be a great bonding experience for both the men and the members of the Club.

BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF CHATTANOOGA GETTING TEENS EXCITED ABOUT READING

Chattanooga, TN July 27, 2010Thanks to a new partnership between Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) and the Walmart Foundation, Boys & Girls Clubs of Chattanooga has received a $10,000 grant to launch a new reading initiative that promotes both educational and leisure reading for adolescents.  The Walmart Foundation’s Bright Spot for Reading Initiative for Adolescent Readers will help create a Reading Center, provide training for staff and encourage intercommunity relationships to ensure the success of young members.

During the summer, while kids are away from school, they began to lose some of the information obtained throughout the school year. This phenomenon is commonly referred to as “summer brain drain”. The Bright Spot Reading Center features books geared at youth ages 11 to 15 and will include programming to encourage adolescents to read more and develop a more positive attitude toward reading.  Programming will include activities in art and technology; field trips to the downtown library and service learning projects in order to create reading opportunities in every area of the Club.

Nationally, the Walmart Foundation has helped establish reading Bright Spots at 100 Clubs throughout the U.S.
